Women’s Voices on Menstrual Health in Angola

Stitching Dignity, Sharing Stories

In Angola, Sofonie Dala leads a program where women learn to sew reusable menstrual pads—combining skill-building with dignity and sustainability. During one workshop, Dona Maria and her niece discovered the joy of using an electric sewing machine, while also opening up about their unique menstrual experiences.

Their conversation highlighted how cycles can differ—sometimes lasting only a single day—and why awareness, education, and access to health services matter. Beyond sewing, these moments create safe spaces for women to share, learn, and support one another.

This initiative connects directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well‑Being: Promoting reproductive health awareness.
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Teaching practical skills and menstrual health knowledge.
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Empowering women through dignity and opportunity.
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Encouraging sustainable menstrual solutions.
